Pennecon Technical Services is currently seeking qualified applications for the following position:

 

Position: EOT Crane Technician 
Location: St. John’s, NL

Reporting directly to the Field Services Manager, the Electric Overhead Traveling (EOT) Crane Technician plays a pivotal role in supporting and assisting all facets of the department. As a key member of our team, the successful candidate will be responsible for inspecting, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing EOT cranes in compliance with CSA B167-16 (Overhead Cranes, Gantry Cranes, Monorails, Hoists, and Jibs) and other industry standards. Key Responsibilities:

Inspections and Maintenance:

  • Conduct routine inspections of EOT cranes, hoists, and related components to ensure proper functionality and compliance with CSA B167-16 and other relevant standards.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance to maximize equipment longevity and minimize downtime.

Troubleshooting and Repairs:

  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and control system malfunctions using diagnostic tools, schematics, and technical manuals.
  • Repair or replace defective components such as motors, gearboxes, wire ropes, brakes, trolleys, and hoist systems.
  • Work with variable frequency drives (VFDs), PLC systems, and other control mechanisms to troubleshoot operational issues.

Load Testing and Commissioning:

  • Perform load testing to ensure cranes meet operational and safety requirements.
  • Assist in the commissioning of new or refurbished cranes, ensuring compliance with manufacturer specifications and industry standards.

Compliance with Safety Standards:

  • Ensure all work is performed in accordance with CSA B167-16, manufacturer guidelines, and other relevant safety regulations.

Estimating and Sales Support:

  • Provide technical input and guidance to the sales team for estimating project scopes and preparing customer quotes.
  • Assist in identifying customer needs by conducting site visits and assessments to determine required repairs, upgrades, or new installations.
  • Develop cost estimates for labor, materials, and equipment based on inspections and customer requirements.
  • Collaborate with the sales team to propose long-term service contracts and maintenance agreements, ensuring customer satisfaction and repeat business.

Customer Communication and Reporting:

  • Provide clients with clear and professional explanations of inspection findings, recommended repairs, and maintenance schedules.
  • Prepare detailed service and inspection reports, documenting all work performed and any deviations from operational standards.
  • Offer technical support and guidance to clients regarding the operation and maintenance of their cranes and hoisting equipment.

Team Collaboration and Training:

  • Work collaboratively with other technicians and support staff to complete complex repair and maintenance projects.
  • Participate in ongoing training to stay up to date with advancements in crane technology, diagnostics, and standards compliance.

Emergency Repairs and On-Call Support:

  • Respond promptly to emergency service calls, diagnosing and resolving issues to minimize client downtime.
  • Be available for on-call support as needed, including after-hours or weekend assignments.

Continuous Improvement and Feedback:

  • Suggest improvements to maintenance practices, tools, and workflows to enhance service efficiency and safety.
  • Stay informed about advancements in EOT crane technology and standards, applying them to enhance service quality.

 

Qualifications:

  • Trade certification (Electrician or Millwright) or relevant technical training.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in EOT crane maintenance, repair, or installation.
  • In-depth knowledge of CSA B167-16 standards and other applicable safety regulations.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, with expertise in crane electrical systems, mechanical components, and control panels.
  • Comfortable working at heights and using lifting equipment safely.
  • Proficiency in using diagnostic tools and software for troubleshooting.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to customer sites as required.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
